Whoopi Goldberg has suggested that a bakery in a Republican part of New York refused to take her birthday order over her left-wing views.
The actress, who has been vocal in her criticism of Donald Trump, claimed on TV show The View that the business may have rebuffed her request for 50 Charlotte Russe desserts because they “didn’t like my politics”.
Ms Goldberg did not name the bakery but Entertainment Weekly alleged that it was Holtermann’s, a 145-year old family-owned business on Staten Island, one of the most conservative parts of New York.
Its owner Jill Holtermann refuted Ms Goldberg’s allegation and said they couldn’t fulfil her order because of boiler issues.
Ms Holtermann told Entertainment Tonight: “I said to Whoopi: ‘I can’t do it right now’.
“We have so many things going on with my boiler’.
“Because the building is from 1930, so, when she called me, I had no idea (if we could) be baking everything.”
Ms Holtermann insisted the decision was “not because of political” comments by Ms Goldberg and that the boiler issue was later resolved.
Ms Goldberg made her claims on Wednesday’s episode of The View as she celebrated her 69th birthday.
She said: “My birthday dessert today was one of my mum’s favourites from when she was a kid, she talked about these all the time, they’re called Charlotte Russe.
“It’s a sponge cake with whipped cream and a cherry on top. I should tell you…the place that made these refused to make them for me.”
Fellow panellist Sara Haines spat out her mouthful of cake live on air while the audience booed and other co-hosts said: “What?”
Ms Goldberg said: “No, let me explain. They said that their ovens had gone down, but folks went and got them anyway, which is why I’m not telling you who made them. It’s not… because I’m a woman, but perhaps they did not like my politics.”
According to Ms Holtermann, the boiler issue meant that she couldn’t commit to Ms Goldberg’s order ahead of time.
She said that she ‘didn’t want to make a commitment that I can’t carry through’, but later she was able to bake the desserts.
Holtermann’s says on its Facebook page that it is the oldest family bakery on Staten Island having been in business since 1878.
Goldberg’s comments came after The Telegraph shared the story of Jack Phillips, a Christian baker who was vilified after refusing to make a cake for a same-sex wedding.
Mr Phillips, a devout Christian, was almost driven out of business by trolls who flooded his bakery with demands for outlandish and offensive cakes.
He was eventually forced to shut down the wedding cake aspect of his business, suffered threats to his life, and dragged through the courts for almost a decade.
